Instructors Training Overview
The UMSF has developed a comprehensive Instructor Development Curriculum
for its members under the direction of the UMSF Education/Instructional
Development Committee. This committee is composed of veteran martial
artists/school owners, many with advanced degrees in areas such as
biomedical science, physical therapy, athletic training, psychology,
etc. The curriculum is composed of four structured levels of development.
Each level expands on and enhances material taught in the previous
levels and allows the instructor to develop to his full potential
as a UMSF Instructor. This sequence of instruction may begin as early
as Brown Belt and continues up through to 4th Degree Black Belt.
The first stage of development is the Assistant Instructor Course.
This course focuses providing a solid background in the basics of
martial science taught at White Belt. The three major components of
this level are: 1) Basic Teaching Skills and Philosophies, 2) Sports
Safety Training, and 3) The UMSF White Belt Curriculum.
The second stage of development is the Instructor Course. This course
focuses providing a solid background in the materials of martial science
taught at the Student Level (White Belt through Black-Brown Belt).
The four major components of this level are: 1) Basic Kinesiology
for Martial Science (Functional Anatomy, Biomechanics, Exercise/Sports
Physiology, Motor Control/Learning, and Exercise/Sports psychology),
2) Teaching Skills and Philosophies for the Basic, Intermediate and
Advanced Student, and Assistant Instructor Levels Instruction, 3)
Strength and Conditioning for the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced
Student Level, and 4) The UMSF Student Curriculum.
The third stage of development is the Chief Instructor Course. This
course focuses providing a solid background in the materials of martial
science taught at the 1st and 2nd Degree Black Belt Level. The four
components of this level are: 1) Advanced Kinesiology for Martial
Science (Functional Anatomy, Biomechanics, Exercise/Sports Physiology,
Motor Control/Learning, and Exercise/Sports psychology), 2) Teaching
Skills and Philosophies for the Lower Black Belt and Instructor Levels
of Instruction, 3) Specialized Strength and Conditioning for the 1st
and 2nd Degree Black Belt Level (including topics such as Palm Training),
and 4) The UMSF 1st and 2nd Degree Black Belt Curriculum.
The forth stage of development is the Master Instructor Course. This
course focuses providing a solid background in the materials of martial
science taught at the 3rd and 4th Degree Black Belt Level and developing
original material pertaining to martial science. The four components
of this level are: 1) Original Kinesiology based Martial Science Research/Project,
2) Teaching Skills and Philosophies for the Upper Black Belt and Chief
Instructor Levels of Instruction, 3) Specialized Strength and Conditioning
for the 3rd and 4th Degree Black Belt Level (including topics such
as Advanced Ki Development), and 4) The UMSF 3rd and 4th Degree Black
Belt Curriculum.
Instruction of material beyond the first four stages is conducted
individually at the UMSF Headquarters with Chief Master Instructor
Marlin Sims and his staff. Instruction at this point is unique for
each individual and allows development of specific skills and areas
according to the interests and abilities of each Master Instructor.
